Exploring the Folk Horror of the Siren Series
The Siren series is, to me, the optimal J-horror experience - so it breaks my heart that people don't talk about it more. I may have overcompensated with this 3 hour video. Enjoy!

Hungry Ghosts is a bizarre yet captivating PS2 "hell simulator" reminiscent of King's Field and Dark Souls that unfortunately never left Japan. Today, I want to talk about this little-known gem and how it's one of the most unique games I've ever played. Really wish you would've touched on how problematic the first stalker's caricature is: the big, dumb, horny inbred brute akin to Lenny from Of Mice and Men is just so unbelievably ableist. Like the dick scratching/fondling animation? His arms raising before he charges you for the first time? It's like every negative stereotype of what 2000s people would refer to as a r*t*rd. This is just such a slap in the face to neurodivergence and people with mental disabilities. And his name is...Debilitus? Like debilitate? God....

European blames Americans for not liking a game that's reliant on talking to others about said game when gaming was super niche in the early 2000s and most households didn't have internet, thus making the game nigh unplayable. But sure, blame Americans (and not your snobby European ass despite Europe being the west just as much as the States are) for the game getting westernized despite countless other J horror games doing just fine. Crazy how it might just be that the first game wasn't set up well for the average American gamer at the time and not about culture or themes.

I never played this game (I don't do too well playing horrors) but I love watching videos about it anyway. I always liked Daniella the most and I always found it funny when sometimes she'll hunt you down, but you can also find her doing chores and she won't attack you, instead simply letting Fiona know that it's "Cleaning time".

I voiced Jennifer/Celeste in Remothered: Broken Porcelain, and as a MASSIVE fan of all things Clock Tower (Haunting Ground is my fave game of all time) I was super sad to see the reception to BP upon release, as we’d all worked super hard on it and it was my first video game protagonist voice role 😂 but I’ve really enjoyed seeing your perspective on it, binging your vids rn 🤣 keep up the great content!

40:01 its interesting you say that. as a teenager those themes flew over my head too. I just recently played SH3 again, and as a man in my mid 30s the sexual undertones are way more impactful , disturbing or even present where they are not?...There is this monster called The Slurper, he is prone to tackle Heather and make her fall...and well, the face of this monster is elongated, like a trunk with a mouth and teeth at the end. when Heather is on the floor, the monster still approach you an attacks you..and of course Heather wears a skirt...i think you know what I mean. That mosnter was not only the most annoying one but also the most salacious

I think what drives me wild about this game is that, like you point out, even though it's obscured and abstracted by the metaphor, the _correct_ thing for you to do, the thing you _must_ do in order to avoid an automatic game over, fight the boss and finish the game...is give yourself an abortion. It's not like in SH1, where you _can_ go out of your way to save Kaufman, (who has aglaophotis and uses it against the final boss) but it's not required to finish the game. In 3, you don't need to do anything extra to access aglaophotis; Heather had some the whole time, and you cannot progress to the end until she uses it.

Split personalities as villain archetypes is so annoying. I have DID and I promise it's not a serial killer disorder. It's childhood trauma manifesting in trying to protect yourself.

I am very glad for videos like this one. I won't ever play this game: I can't handle it. I know I can't. I played the first Silent Hill, and I couldn't handle playing it a second time. Not even when I stuck to playing only during daylight. The horrors in THIS game are far too personal, far too real for me. But I deeply appreciate folks talking about it - about all the Silent Hill games. They're fascinating for me, but I just can't hack it to really play them. I have endured some bad, bad stuff in life, and between Silent Hill 2 and 3, all my worst memories and deepest fears are just right there on the screen. Despite having never played 2, I saw a man doing a Pyramid Head cosplay - an excellent costume, and he had got the gait JUST right, the posture, the way the head moves, all of it. (He also had a handler, disguised as a "slave girl," but I knew enough to understand she was guiding him through the convention, there was no way he could see much!) I didn't go near him. In fact I literally hid behind my brother, then made my brother stand between me and the cosplayer while I was hiding behind some display shelves. I was shaking like a leaf just seeing that much. So: thank you for making an excellent video that both digs into the reasons why the game's so damn scary, thank you for giving it this literary reading as it were. I don't have the nerves to play this, but learning about it from videos like yours, like eurothug's - makes it possible for me to still face the fear, makes it possible for me to articulate some of what I would never be able to withstand if I tried to experience the game directly.

Alisia also treats Heather like shit in this game. She wants Heather to be as hopeless as she is so they can just end it, she doesn't believe in Heather, and because they are the same person she happens to be the part of Heather that wants to commit suicide. even when Heather convinces Alisia they can make it out of this she still breathes Heather in that last journal entry. Also, I think at one point she rips control away from Heather to fuck with Cladiua.
